Thursday April 22/10 – When We Were Kings + Guru tribute

Today on The Music of My Mind (MoMM), we will feature the music of Kings, as in any music that has king in either the song name, album name or the band name. It was only a coincidence that this theme came up for me on the same evening as Game 4 of the NHL playoffs between the LA Kings and Vancouver Canucks. The Kings in fact were very close to bringing BC’c beloved Canucks to the brink of elimination.

The idea actually initially sprung from the band Kings Go Forth from Milwaukee, who recently released their fine debut album ” The Outsiders Are Back  “on Luaka Bop earlier this month. The band’s incredibly catchy mix of Funk and Soul is one of the next to join the ranks of the soul revival movement. The next factor was one of my favorite bands, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings  and their new record “I Learned the Hard Way”, which reached #1 this week on CFUV’s Top 30 album charts. The rest of today’s Kings playlist just evolved from there as you will see below. It is an incredibly diverse mix of artists who will all be crowned “King for a day” on the Music of My Mind. In our last 1/2 hour (6:00-6:30PST), our special tribute to rapper Guru from GangStarr (see post below).

  12. Gang Starr – Just To Get A Rep
  13. Gang Starr – Take It Personal
  14. Gang Starr – Mass Appeal

R.I.P. GURU

Keith Elam aka GURU (GangStarr)  died on Tuesday April 20th at the age of 47. According to the LA Times,”the rapper had been suffering from melanoma over the last year and had been in a coma since a heart attack March 2″. GURU was definitely one of my favorite 5 MCs of all time and a huge influence on hip-hop heads all over the world, especially in the 1990s. As a DJ in Saskatoon SK, Canada, I had the opportunity to open for and introduce GURU several years ago when he played there (2001).   It was a huge thrill for me to meet GURU later that night. When GURU rapped, you took heed and DJ Premier’s production provided the perfect backdrop for his monotone flow and also served as the prototype for many New York rappers in the 90s. The combination of GURU and Premier was probably the best ever MC Producer/DJ combo. He was the king of the streetwise narrative. I have read several stories related to GURU’s death and they all, except Oliver Wang’s, claim that GURU was 43 and not 47. Read his LA Times obituary here as well as the NY TImes obit. I tend to believe a reputable journalist/writer like my man O-Dub on this one. RIP MC Keithy E.

On Thursday’s edition of the Music of My Mind (5:00-6:30PST), we will celebrate the music of Gang Starr and Guru’s Jazzmatazz in our last half hour (6:00-6:30PST).
