New Orleans Special – Thursday Sept 2/10

Today on the Music of My Mind, in our first hour we will celebrate the music of New Orleans in honour of the fifth anniversary of hurricane Katrina this week. New Orleans has been on my mind a lot in the past couple of months as I have been following the developments in the Gulf Coast as many have since the BP disaster. With such disasters always comes great art. Speaking of which,  I have also finally completed season 1 of HBO’s critically acclaimed series Treme, set in post-Katrina Nola, which focuses on how characters readjust to life after Katrina. Many of these characters happen to be musicians, living in the Treme neighborhood. it has also just been announced that Treme will return for a second season and a soundtrack will be released later this month. Spike Lee’s new documentary “If God Is Willing and Da Creek Don’t Rise,” also recently aired on HBO and is a follow up to his 2006 doc “When the Levees Broke”. In the new documentary which mixes archival footage with hundreds of fresh interviews in this exhaustive, yet inspiring work which was shot after the New Orleans Saints won this year’s Super Bowl and concludes with footage of the beginning of the BP disaster. The story told is one of hope, despair and  celebration. I’m sure it will be on DVD and itunes/netflix soon.

Wendell Pierce stars as Antoine Batiste in HBO's Treme

Of course there is also the music to celebrate, of which there is no equal in history in America. A rich and diverse legacy of jazz, rhythm and blues, zydeco, cajun, funk and of course brass bands. Today we will hear music from the likes of Allen Toussaint, John Boutee, Dr. John, Trombone Shorty, Galactic and more. Stay tuned to 101.9FM and from 5-6:30PM.
