Hilario Duran – Jazzfest June 28 Highlights

Cuban-Canadian pianist and bandleader Hilario Duran and his Latin Jazz Big Band were the featured Jazzfest act on Tuesday June 28 at the Alix Goolden Hall. The band was making its last stop on its “From Cuba to Canada with Thanks” tour. Featuring singer Luis Maria Ochoa and two of Canada’s most accomplished jazz musicians, Jane Bunnett on flute and soprano saxophone, and Victoria almnus Phil Dwyer on tenor saxophone, the 14 member band was for the most part stellar with the Cuban big band sound, yet remarkably similar to the last time the band was in town last year at the Farquahar Auditorium. The hall’s seating arrangement, however, potentially prevented a major Cuban dance/salsa party from breaking out, which I would have love to have seen. Check out Times Colonist article by Amy Smart for a great review, as in I couldn’t have said it better myself!!
