One of my top picks for the opening weekend of Jazzfest is Toronto’s Alexis Baro and his quintet. Alexis came to Canada in 2001 and became one of the most in-demand jazz trumpeters in Toronto and in Canada. Originally from Havana, his most recent album is 2013’s New Orleans and Caribbean influenced Blue Skin. At Hermann’s tonight, Baro will be backed by some of VIctoria’s finest including Kelby MacNayr (drums), Pablo Cardenas (piano) Sean Drabitt (bass). Come and see why Alexis Baro has been nominated three times for “Best Trumpet Player” by the National Jazz Awards (Canada).
